Songjiang athlete Shan Yiheng won the silver medal in the 50-meter freestyle swimming during the 10th National Games for Persons with Disabilities held in Tianjin. His timing of 39.214 seconds also broke the national record of 40.59 seconds.
Shan also came third in the 50-meter butterfly and performed well in the 100 freestyle and 50 backstroke.
Born with congenital cerebral palsy, Shan has difficulty moving his limbs and first joined a rehabilitation project set up by the district disabled persons’ federation and sports authority 2015.
That’s when he first learned swimming and met his coach Qian Weigang. The project turned out to be a success for the boy, as not only did he recover some strength in his upper limbs but his wish of achieving something better also came into view.
Shan gradually developed skills in several swimming styles and has significantly improved his physical condition.
Last year, he took part in the national swimming championship for disabled people and was able to bring home two silver and two bronze medals.
