Granny’s bead-full tribute on China’s 70th founding anniversary

An elderly Songjiang resident, Sun Zhaoling, has created the national flag with 10,000 beads to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the People’s Republic of China.

“Significant changes have taken place over the past seven decades,” the 75-year-old noted, adding that she wanted to express her passionate feelings for the country.

The work began in April. To present a better visual effect, she chose beads smaller than a grain of rice and her friends at the bead workshop also came to help.

Next to the flag she also sewed the Chinese phonetic alphabets for “I love my country” and the number 70, which totaled the amount of beads to 15,000.

“Our life has been improving, especially since the reform and opening-up, and I would like to give my good wishes for China and Songjiang as well to thrive and prosper,” Sun said.

Sun’s previous works have mostly showcased local cultural, historical and social changes in Songjiang, some depicting the Square Pagoda, a cultural relic, and the tramlines that entered service under a year ago.
