Composition of the Songjiang cultural encyclopedia is under way with 4,000 entries selected out of the designed 10,000.
The project, which began earlier in June, is set to conclude in three or four years with about 2.5 million characters covering the suburban district’s historical and cultural records.
It has 23 categories, including literature, traditional drama, dance and architecture.
Editors and experts coordinate their work based on their fields and pool their work together in the end. Currently meetings are held regularly to push forward steady progress.
By sorting out local cultural groups and further tapping certain cultural events, new discoveries are also uncovered.
The encyclopedia will not only showcase the region’s academic strength, said Lu Ju, executive editor of the project, but also act as a continuous effort to gather talent in the field to enhance and research and uphold the cultural history of “the Root of Shanghai.”
